Flu Season

Flu season is upon us. Yuck. I just want to remind everyone of the best way to prevent getting the flu: HANDWASHING! I know, I know, washing your hands all the time dries out your skin, but that's just one more reason to use that fabulous-smelling lotion in your purse! ;) Any time you touch a public surface, such as door handles, grocery carts/baskets, restaurant menus, etc. you should wash your hands or use antibacterial hand sanitizer. Also, (I don't know why you wouldn't already) anytime you use the restroom, whether at home or in public, wash your hands. If you're in public, use your paper towel to open the door to avoid getting any germs on your hands as you exit.

Avoid contact with your face. Our faces contain the three most perfect ways for infections to take root: eyes, nose, and mouth. I'm a nail biter myself, so it takes a conscious effort for me to not touch my mouth with my hands, but it's extremely important during flu season. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue or into your elbow, and if you happen to cough or sneeze into your hands, wash them immediately without touching anything. If you happen to get sick this flu season, just remember that keeping everything clean and washing your hands frequently keeps the germs from spreading to others. If you have children, remind them of the importance of handwashing and use these times as teaching opportunities to help slow the spread of germs between kids.

Proper handwashing:

Run hands under warm water
Lather with soap on hands, wrists, and under finger nails for 20-30 seconds
Rinse thoroughly under warm water
Dry with clean paper towel or hand towel
Turn off faucet using back of hand or paper towel

If you happen to get the flu, remember to get plenty of rest so your body can recover from the virus, drink plenty of fluids because you're losing lots of extras through sneezing, coughing, and sweating with fever, and please follow handwashing rules and keep everyone protected from your germs!

Hope you all stay well this holiday season and can avoid the flu! :)
